Yeah.. your furnace should get a tune up.

4 September 2013

Fall is right around the corner, which means your heating system will soon have to kick it into high gear. Before you put it to good Fine-Tune-Furnaceuse for another Minnesota winter, it is a good idea to get it tuned up.

“Is this REALLY necessary?”

A tune up isn’t technically necessary, but it is highly recommended. Heating system experts recommend that all furnaces and boilers get semi-regular tune ups. As one qualified Minnesota home inspector puts it:

“The best analogy I can think of is going to the dentist every six months for a check-up and cleaning; probably not necessary, but recommended.”

Tune-ups are about keeping your home safe and preventative maintenance. The last thing you want to be doing is calling a repair company in an emergency when it is 10 degrees out! Most tune ups cost about $100 and the frequency of which you should have one performed depends on the age of your heating system. Newer furnaces can get by with having a tune up every other year, but once a furnace is 10+ years old it should be getting yearly tune ups.

When scheduling a furnace tune up make sure to ask what they will be doing. At a minimum, they should perform the seven requirements listed on CenterPoint Energy’s page. If you are a CenterPoint Energy customer you are eligible for a $25 rebate on a tune up every other year.
