Household Hazardous Waste

21 February 2013

About 50 millions cell phones are replaced worldwide each month and only 10% are recycled. If we recycled just 1 million cell phones, imagesit would reduce greenhouse gas emissions equal to taking 1,368 cars off the road for a year. (source)

The energy saved by recycling hazardous items is just one example of why recycling your hazardous waste is important for the environment. For example, when metals are broken down or recycled it keeps them out of the ground and our water systems. Your cars motor oil is consolidated and used as an alternative fuel in cement production.

Many different household items can be hazardous waste. These could be anything from motor oil to hairspray or electronics to mercury containing products. Check out of all the hazardous items that need to be properly disposed of in this list from Hennepin County

Not sure where to get rid of your bags of hazardous waste? Plan a trip to your local hazardous waste facility. Hennepin County has them in Bloomington and Brooklyn Park and most items are free to recycle!
