Air sealing is important for cooling season too!

18 May 2012

A beautiful and steamy Minnesota summer is on its way! Which means cooling season will soon be here. In Minnesota we often focus on the heating season because of our ridiculously cold winters! But, we cannot forget that 55% of out homes energy use is heating and air conditioning. All those little air leaks let precious cold air out of your home as well.

This picture demonstrates some common areas that air leaks are found in your home.

If you enjoy do-it-yourself home repair projects, and have some experience with this type of activity, then this Energy Star DIY guide to air sealing is for you. Yet, if you are not too handy (like yours truly), then I strongly recommend working with a contractor. It will be safer and most likely help your home save more energy and money in the long run. It is best that the contractor is BPI (Building Performance Institute) certified.
