Hey, Mpls: no more plastic bags for yard waste!

5 March 2012

Spring 2012 is just around the corner! So before you start getting supplies for spring cleaning, there has been an important and positive change to yard waste pickup in Minneapolis.  Plastic garbage bags with yard scraps will no long be picked up in 2012. So why the change?

Using conventional plastic bags for yard waste increases the processing cost and results in lower quality compost…This results in an improved collection program with lower yard waste processing costs and a higher quality finished compost.

Don’t fret though, you can put your yard scraps in compostable plastic bags, Kraft paper bags, or (my favorite) a resuable container. A ton easier to throw leaves in a big bin versus a bag!

Why is it that the city of Minneapolis has not see fit to tell people about this big change? There have been no notices with our water/solid waste bills, for example.

Connie: they may be waiting until Spring has truly sprung, to tell people closer to the time when they may be doing yardwork. I will see if I can find out anything more!
