Green Yard Work This Fall
If the sound of leaf blowers on a fall day disturb your peace, try going gas-free while doing your fall yard work and use rakes and hand-held trimmers instead of electric leaf blowers and trimmers . Although this is more work, there are many benefits – raking the lawn for an hour burns about 250 calories, not to mention helping you save on gas and keep the peace for your neighbors. You can always hire neighborhood kids to do it – you will be supporting the local economy and getting kids outside and active!
Once you have collected all your leaves, instead of just throwing them in a plastic bag at the end of your driveway, try composting them to produce great nitrogen rich organic material. This is great to mix in with soil when you are planting in the spring. More information on how to correctly compost leaves.
