It’s that time of year again – Bike Walk Week!  Bike Walk Week 2010 in Minnesota is from Saturday, October 2nd through Sunday, October 10th.  It’s a beautiful time of year to join hundreds of other Minnesota residents in leaving the car at home and taking advantage of our bike trails, transit system and shoes with arch support.  Biking, busing and walking isn’t just an environmentally friendly action to take, it can also have a real impact on the wallets of American families.

All the activities of Bike Walk Week are meant to highlight the advantages of getting around in a multi-modal way—from better health and cleaner air to a fatter wallet. For instance, families can save $5,000-$10,000 per year by reducing the number of cars in their driveways. According to Bundle data, a web site that aggregates household data, the average household spent $5,477 on gas and auto expenses last year. . . . That’s more than we spend on groceries or utilities, and more than we spend on travel, entertainment, clothes and shoes, and hobbies — combined.” And the American Public Transit Association reports that “riding public transit saves individuals $9,293 annually.”

Awesome events during Bike Walk Week include Bike n’ Ride for Free on Metro Transit, Bike/Walk to School Day, Share the Ride Day with Nice Ride and HOURCAR, and Bike/Walk to Workshop Weekend!

Register online for extra encouragement and be eligible to win prizes!
