Icicles of Doom!

On the bus coming to downtown Minneapolis today I noticed some seriously scary icicles hanging off some of the awnings in my neighborhood.  Icicles are caused by melting water coming off your roof and freezing again.  They aren’t only frightening looking, but they can cause some real damage to your home! Ice dams and icicles are caused by warm air escaping your home through your attic and heating your roof.  It’s easy to see these warm patches on your roof – it’s the places where snow has melted. Melting snow doesn’t just create those long threatening ice death sticks on your home, it can also seep into your roof and walls and cause expensive water damage. Suffice to say, you don’t want to go there.

Melting and ice dams usually means that you have open bypasses in your attic or insufficient insulation.  For more information about sealing bypasses, visit the Minnesota Energy Challenge for a step-by-step guide!
