Xcel to introduce solar incentive for residents

21 December 2009

Good news for Xcel Energy customers in Minnesota who have been dreaming about going off the grid!  Xcel is currently looking for final approval from the Minnesota Public Utilities Commission (MPUC) to institute a Solar Rewards program in Minnesota.  Based on similar incentive payment programs already running Colorado and New Mexico, the Solar Rewards program would provide a nearly 30% discount on installation of small-scale residential photovoltaic solar panels for electricity generation.  Paired with the already existing federal tax rebates that cover another 30% of the cost of a photovoltaic system, it’s becoming more and more economically viable to consider solar.  But remember – before you even start thinking about adding renewable energy to your home, make sure you have done as much energy efficiency and conservation as possible so you can have a properly sized system!
