Does Your Sunscreen Work?

8 July 2009

What with all the swimming, camping, lying on the beach, gardening, biking and general outdoorsiness going on in the summer, most people choose to protect themselves from the sun by wearing sunscreen.  And why not – easy to apply, nostalgic smell, doesn’t interfere with any activities.  Given that more than a million cases of skin cancer are diagnosed in the US every year, sunscreen ranks up there as one of our most important allies in public health.  But according to the Environmental Working Group (a not-for-profit research group), 3 out of 5 brand-name sunscreens either don’t protect skin from sun damage or contain hazardous chemicals – or both!

Luckily, EWG provides a lot of great information about which brands are most effective and the best for you, including daily moisturizers and lip balms.  They also have a great one-page downloadable shopping guide to safer sunscreens (PDF).  So slather up with the good stuff and enjoy the sunny days while we have them!
