Backyard Harvest Garden Initiative

8 April 2009

Interested in having your own garden but want some professional guidance?  Check out the Backyard Harvest program offered by the nonprofit Permaculture Research Institute – Cold Climate.  This is such an insanely cool opportunity – for a cost, Backyard Harvest contracts with homeowners, renters and communities to create AND maintain backyard gardes as well as HARVEST all the produce weekly for each family!

So you’d get 16 – 20 weeks of fresh veggies and the like, a professional garden design, access to community events, compost, a watering system and a garden journal with notes from your personal farmer.  It’s an investment ($1,025 to $1,295), but that garden will last and the benefits from local food are nearly endless – a great education for families, a way to lower your carbon footprint, and homegrown just tastes better!

Right now the pilot is focusing in South Minneapolis and the Morningside neighborhood of Edina, and there are still available customer slots for the 2009 growing season. If I had a yard and lived in one of those neighborhoods, I’d be on it like white on rice.  So cool!

For more information, check out the Backyard Harvest website or contact the Program Coordinator Krista Leraas at harvest@pricoldclimate.org.
