Breaking News: Energy Efficiency is AWESOME

10 March 2009

The Wall Street Journal is on the energy efficiency train with this great article about the power of basic energy efficiency improvements – like weatherstripping, air sealing and insulation – to save homeowners money and reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

‘Homes are embarrassingly inefficient. They consume 21% of all energy used in the U.S., according to federal figures. That’s more than cars, or planes, or offices. Yet studies say U.S. homes commonly waste 30% of the energy they use. About one-third of that energy loss could be stopped by such simple moves as caulking and insulating.”

I especially like their chart that compares the average amount of emissions that could be saved through different methods to the cost or savings of using that method, like building efficiency, geothermal, nuclear and wind.  Guess what comes out ahead with the biggest dollar savings…
