Recyle your cell phone for a good cause

4 March 2009

Electronics recycling can be a tricky beast, especially when a lot of it happens overseas without the benefit of strict environmental standards and workers rights to protect the earth and people from the harmful byproducts.  But the average lifespan for a cell phone is a pitiful 18 months and 1% are properly recycled – which is a problem because most cell phones contain enough lead to qualify as hazardous waste!

So I was glad to see this post by the Daily Green about cell phone recycling that actually benefits good causes.  I was especially touched by Cell Phones for Soldiers, which trades in your old cell phone for prepaid calling cards for American soldiers through Recellular.  So when you decide to trade up to the next best phone, make sure you send your old phone away to make a real difference.
