A Whale of a Difference

26 November 2008

I don’t know about you, but I love watching the totals at the top of the Energy Challenge website climb higher and higher.  We’ve hit another milestone: over 18,300 households are pledging to reduce their personal energy use and save

over 140 MILLION POUNDS

of carbon dioxide pollution every year!  That’s such a crazy big number, I don’t really know what it means.  Well, 140 MILLION pounds of CO2 is the equivalent savings of recycling over 21,800 TONS of waste instead of sending it to the landfill.

Okay, 21, 800 tons is still a crazy big number.  So let’s put that into perspective:

The biggest animal on the earth is the blue whale.  Mature blue whales can measure from 75 to 100 feet from head to tail – as long as an 8 to 10 story building!  And these giant creatures can weigh up to 150 tons.

Currently, Challenge members are pledging to save the equivalent of recycling the weight of

145 blue whales!

That’s some serious recycling.
