October 8th is Walk to School Day

7 October 2008

Looking for a way to teach your kids or friends about ‘alternative’ transportation?  Tomorrow, Wednesday October 8th is International Walk to School Day – although, don’t worry, you could bike to school, too!  Nearly 1,500 schools are participating from 48 states to encourage students to get to school without a car.  Not only does walking or biking to school help kids reduce their family’s carbon footprint and do something good for the earth, it is also an easy and fun way for kids to build outdoor activity into their lives and meet the Center for Disease Control and Prevention’s recommendation of 30 minutes of moderate physical activity at least five days a week. There are currently fourteen events happening in Minnesota around Walk to School Day, so check it out and see if there’s something happening in your community.

Of course, as the winter creeps upon us here in Minnesota, it may get too chilly for your kids to bike to school – so encourage them to do it now while they still have a chance.
