Easy fix for costly air “suckage”

5 March 2008

We’re all familiar with the little cracks and holes in our homes and apartments; a little draft here, maybe a cold spot that you’re so used to you don’t think about anymore. But all those little cracks and holes can add up to a big energy drain on your home – in fact, they can add up to a two-square-foot hole that is open all the time. Would you leave a window open in your home twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week, come winter or summer?

We all know leaving our windows open creates an energy drain and causes our heating or cooling systems to work harder, but you might not know that you can take easy, effective actions to plug up that “window” you’re leaving open all the time. I was surprised to learn recently that drafty outlets can account for up to 20% of the air leakage in your home.

Luckily, for under $5 you can find outlet and switch plate sealers that can help you insulate those tricky outlets and help close that window.
