Bike Helmets: Helping or Harming?

Biking season is certainly underway in our fair Twin Cities (just in time for Bike Walk to Work Week), yay!  As a frequent cyclist, I enjoy many things about two-wheeled transportation: getting outside, our great bike paths, getting exercise and doing something positive for the environment.  And I always ALWAYS wear a helmet.

However, some groups are claiming that helmets are actually harmful to cyclists! Their arguments are that drivers are more reckless around cyclists wearing helmets, and vice versa, because of the perception of safety – or that helmets make cyclists more reckless.  However, it is proven that wearing a helmet seriously decreases the incidents of brain injury and fatal accidents.  So, as “uncool” as they may look (although I think my bright pink Bell helmet is pretty cute), they can save your life.

So, what do you think?
