“During a typical hot summer day, which of following scenarios uses less energy: (1) keeping my air conditioning on all day using a programmable thermostat or (2) on turn on the air conditioner when I’m home? Please assume that usually spend 8-9 hours working away from my home during the day.”
Turning the air conditioner on when you get home will use less electricity. The set back thermostat will allow the air conditioner to start up earlier so it is cool when you get home, but it will cost more.
