Attention: Men use more energy than women!

17 June 2008

At least, in Sweden. A recent study found that single Swedish men consume on average 20% more energy than their female counterparts. The study examined both direct and indirect energy consumption, and found some variances. The single largest difference between male and female energy use was in transportation, with 40% of the men’s energy use being spent on transportation; women were much more likely to drive less and obey the speed limit while doing so. Indirectly, women spent more energy on health care, pharmaceuticals and clothing.

Stereotypes? Or insight into energy use patterns? I know that I drive a lot less than my male friends, but I’m also an environmental activist so I don’t think I provide a good baseline.
